Peter walked on the water! Not just Jesus, but Peter also. Sure, the story ends with Peter sinking, but first he walked. He got out of the boat!
The other 11… The didn’t get out of the boat. And they didn’t walk on the water. You can’t walk on the water from the safety of the boat!
But hold on… Where are you actually safer? In the boat, or close to Jesus? That’s an often overlooked aspect of this story. Peter wasn’t seeking danger, he was seeking Jesus, and Jesus wasn’t in the boat! Peter’s heart was fully committed to seek his savior, to be with Him.
Look at the wording. Peter asked not for a miracle, not for power, but to come to Jesus! “If it is you, bid me come.” What a prayer!
There is no safer place than in His presence. But sometimes you have to get out of the boat. You have to take that chance, you have to walk out on the water in faith that where He leads, you can go. You must see Jesus’s side as the place to be, regardless of where Jesus is. Join him!
No, don’t just boldly jump out on your own! Don’t let pride drown you under the waves. Don’t be presumptuous.
Peter first asked,
Second heard,
Third acted.
That’s our pattern. First seek Jesus, not the miracle, not the success, not the fame, not the power, but just Jesus. Seek His presence. Ask Him if you can come to Him.
Second hear from heaven. Hear His voice. Know His will for you. If you don’t hear, don’t act. Wait for it. Be sure He is inviting you to walk out in that way. Don’t assume you will be OK, know it by hearing from heaven. That is faith, by hearing the word of God.
Then act. Just get up and step out of that “safe” boat with everyone else into the stormy seas with Jesus. Don’t worry about how, don’t let man’s ways or nature’s laws stop you. Jesus is above all! Trust.
The other 11 missed a great blessing that day. No, I do not refer to walking on the water. They missed the blessing of Jesus presence. How glorious! Even in the midst of the storm, being with Him is indescribable joy and peace.
As long as we keep our eyes on him…. But that is another story.
